Dominic Thiem is another Grand Slam champion, alongside Daniil Medvedev, in this year’s tournament field. After injuring his wrist in 2021, Thiem made his comeback this year and is currently showing match after match that he is among the world’s best. He will also be playing in Saudi Arabia for the first time. „This past year has been challenging, but I’m starting to see huge progress in my game. I’ve worked extremely hard and I am confident to compete at my highest level in 2023. The Diriyah Tennis Cup is a great opportunity for me to play the best players in the world, which is an optimal preparation for the upcoming season“, he said in the tournament preview. Thiem is a former World No. 3 and won his first Grand Slam title at the 2020 US Open. There he defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who will also compete in Saudi Arabia in December, in five sets.
Alongside Dominic Thiem, Gael Monfils from France will return to Diriyah, having competed there in 2019. He became a crowd favorite when he reached the semi-final of the Diriyah Tennis Cup three years ago. The former World No. 6 has won 11 titles during his great career and showed during his first visit to Saudi Arabia that he is one of the greatest entertainers in the sport. “I have only very good memories of the first edition of the Diriyah Tennis Cup 2019. It was an amazing tournament! The fans were really great. That’s why I’m happy to be able to compete again in Saudi Arabia, especially after my long injury break”, mentioned Monfils. Due to several injuries he has only played one tournament since May 2022. Some weeks ago his wife Elina Svitolina, a world class tennis player from Ukraine, gave birth to their first child.
From December 8-10, a total of 12 players will compete at the Diriyah Tennis Cup 2022, with total prize money of 3 million US dollars to play for. More players will be announced in the coming weeks and the advance ticket sale will start soon.
The Diriyah Season is a 4-month-long celebration of sport, entertainment and culture being held on the outskirts of Riyadh.
